    MTN Digital Revenue Rises, Boosted By Instant Messaging Super App Ayoba

    MTN announced today that Ayoba reached 11.6 million monthly active users’ milestone as at 31 December 2021.

    “This represents an addition of 6.1 million users since December 2020.”

    MTN’s instant messaging platform Ayoba was launched by MTN in March 2019.

    The app supports peer-to-peer messaging that is encrypted at all times.

    Ayoba users have the ability to send and receive encrypted messages and share files, photos, videos, voice notes, and their location. They can also subscribe live channels. These channels provide localised content to entertain, educate, and empower communities.

    The platform will help Africa grow digitally by removing barriers like limited internet access and low smartphone penetration, inaccessibility to local content and affordability.

    COVID-19 has helped accelerate the development of digital ecosystems in our markets. It has also led to significant uptake in telecommunications services and supported cashless payments. The pandemic has accelerated growth, but it is still sustaining at higher levels.

    MTN also stated that Nigeria is its largest market and digital adoption continues to grow as customers use more digital services and products. This trend was accelerated by COVID-19.

    According to MTN, the digital revenue grew by 91.5% because of an active user base that grew and deeper penetration of our digital products.

    Nigeria’s active user population grew 162.1% to 7.75 million. This was primarily due to the instant messaging platform Ayoba. The number of active users rose 172.9%, to approximately 3.8million.
