South African startups are invited to apply to the uYilo electric mobility program, which offers up to ZAR1million (US$64,000), for projects in energy storage and vehicle systems.

The Technology Innovation Agency is a public agency of the Department of Science and Innovation. In 2013, the national UYilo Electric Mobility Program was created as a collaborative multi-stakeholder program aimed at enabling, facilitating, and mobilizing electric mobility in South Africa.

Projects funded in the past included batteries, charging solutions and motors. Inverters, remote monitoring, remote control systems, and electric cars. Submissions for projects will be reviewed against the requirements. Those accepted must meet a set milestone during the project development process.

Hiten Parmar, director of uYilo, stated that the uYilo kick-start funding initiative was key to the development of a local e–mobility value-chain.

The kickstart fund is designed to accelerate existing research and develop them to the point where they are commercially viable. It supports local products and services as well as developing skills so that South Africa can build its own electric vehicle industry. This will increase export opportunities while also creating local jobs.

Project applications are accepted from January 31st to midday
