WIPO launches a new global award programme for SMEs in its first category

In July 2022, five small- and medium-sized businesses (SMEs) will receive the first WIPO Global Award. This is the first category of awardees that will be followed in subsequent years.

WIPO launched a global awards program to recognize exceptional individuals and enterprises that use intellectual property (IP), to make a positive difference at home and abroad.

In July 2022, five small- and medium-sized businesses ( SME) will receive the first WIPO Global Award. This is the first category of awardees that will be followed by other groups like youth and women in future years.

“SMEs are the largest sector of business in many countries. A vibrant and innovative SME sector will be critical for future economic growth.” Daren Tang, WIPO director-general, stated that many SMEs who innovate don’t know how intellectual property can help them market em>.

 

Tang said that the Awards Programme was part of the Organisation’s commitment to building a more inclusive IP ecosystem. “WIPO will continue looking for ways to bring IP benefits to the grassroots level and for entrepreneurs and enterprises to tap into the power of IP in order to help their ideas become a reality. Support for such businesses will help create jobs, boost business growth, and aid economic development em>

Up to March 14, 2022, any SME in any of the 193 WIPO Member States can self-nominate for this award.

The candidates will be evaluated by seven judges who are experts in IP, innovation, and business. They come from many backgrounds. The judges will evaluate the candidates using a variety of criteria. They will consider the diverse backgrounds and locations of the applicants.

The winners will be selected by the panel of judges. They will then participate in an awards ceremony at the WIPO Assemblies that will take place from July 15-22, 2022.

Winners will receive a mentorship program to help them use IP to grow their businesses, as well other support and sponsorship to facilitate access to funding and to increase business growth.
